Dr R N Makroo is a post graduate (MD) in Pathology, Diplomate in Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion (DIBT) with a fellowship in transfusion medicine from the U.K. He is currently the Director, Professor& Sr. Consultant, Department of Transfusion Medicine, Molecular Biology & Transplant Immunology at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals
Prior to this he has established the Department of Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology at Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar, Kashmir, India in 1981 and worked there till 1990 as Sr. Consultant and Additional Professor
As the National consultant for the WHO, between 1990 and 1992, Dr Makroo has been instrumental in shaping & developing transfusion services in the country. He has helped in amending rules and regulations and revitalised and modified the training programs. He has been a pioneer in transfusion medicine and has to his credit introduction of Nucleic Acid technology (NAT), anti HCV testing, 3 log Leucoreduction for improvement of blood safety in India. He is a recipient of three national awards for Blood Transfusion Sevices in India
He himself being a regular voluntary blood donor having donated more than 148 times. He envisions to create a better integration of the ISTM community with the international forum. This would include promoting higher membership, exchange of information and knowledge through participation in presentations and publications, training and learning forums and raising the Indian Standards of blood safety, quality systems and transfusion practices. He wishes to see all the doctors working in blood banks as members of ISTM having uniform thinking to ensure safe blood and blood components for each and every patient by adopting highest standards of practice.

The fraternity of Transfusion Medicine has come a long way and Indian Society of Transfusion Medicine ( ISTM ) is a result of that path of progression . From day to day transfusions to regenerative medicine the journey has resulted in blooming in the valley, flowers in form of experts, now scattering their fragrance through the country. Their contribution through the website of ISTM will lead to the integrity and scientific progress of individual members and society has a whole.
As one of the initial postgraduates in Transfusion Medicine from SGPGIMS, currently the Head of the Department and Professor, Department of Transfusion Medicine at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC), Bhopal, Dr Manisha Shrivastava, secretary ISTM has been instrumental to set up a state of the art facility in central India with 100% blood components and apheresis facility in the year 2000 at Bhopal .
Her efforts have been awarded at various fronts as she has been the recipient of International BBTS, Princess of Wales Memorial Award and bursary 2002, ISBT Fellowship, 2006, awarded by the International Blood Transfusion Society, National ISBTI appreciation award 2007, H D Shourie award, awarded by Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohaematology, ISBTI appreciation in 2011 for being the Chairperson of ISBTI MP Chapter.
Her department has been given award of excellence by NACO and NBTC through MoHFW, Government of India in 2014. In addition to being the founder member of ISTM and secretary, she has been Nominated as a member of prestigious technical resource group for Transfusion Medicine, as a national expert for transfusion medicine on the panel list of NACO, technical expert of blood transfusion, Government of MP and MPSACS, contributor to various activities of NACO like equipment specification review, NACO publications on training modules, quality management systems and blood safety program. She has also contributed as a Team Member for assessment of Training Centres for Blood Bank personnel in the country, nominated as a member of the committee to deliberate on the modalities of restructuring of Blood banks and member National Haemovigilance Advisory Committee at NIB New Delhi.
She has organized two major national conference and many CMEs under her leadership. She is an active researcher and reviewer for National and International journals and is on National Advisory Board of Asian Journal of Transfusion Science. She also a PhD supervisor and is guiding research students. She is also a nodal officer for training of medical personnels in MP run by NACO since 2006. She is actively involved in student activities, institutional activities, awareness programmes, and institutional publications. She is a widely travelled individual and has special interest in Hindi and English literature and music.
He is currently working as an Additional Professor in the department of Transfusion Medicine, Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow. He completed his MBBS from King George Medical College, Lucknow in the year 1995 and thereafter did his MD Transfusion Medicine & Post Doctoral Certificate Course (PDCC) in Apheresis & Component Therapy from SGPGIMS, Lucknow.
He has over 18 years of teaching and research experience He received the “H.D.Shourie award” in 2011, for vital contribution in the field of transfusion medicine. He was the member of the first technical committee of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH), formed for drafting the standards for the blood banks.
He is the principal assessor for NABH accreditation of blood banks. He has many scientific publications in peer reviewed national & international journals. He has received many fellowships including one from United Nations in 2006. Currently he is also in the executive committee of Indian Society of Transfusion Medicine.

I have been honoured with the “H.D Shourie Award” in 2006 by the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion & Immunohematology for contribution to Red Cell Serology. During my studentship I have been thrice awarded with “Best scientific paper award”
In addition I am a Blood Bank Technical Assessor of NABH, Quality control of India, a member of the International Editorial board, IBIMA publishing, USA, technical expert, Blood Banking, Govt. of West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and North Eastern states. I also serve as a Blood Bank resource person of NACO and a reviewer of 8 national & international journals. I also serve as a member secretary, Eastern India, National hemovigilance program, Govt. of India andis a core Member of Technical Committee, “Cord Blood Banking” Govt. of West Bengal. I am a member of several national and international scientific bodies and have 46 national and international publications till date most of which describes Immunohematology. As a Joint Secretary of ISTM I shall try my best to develop Transfusion Medicine in the country and shall take special attention in the training, teaching and academics.
